The Japanese Bantam is a true bantam breed, called Chabo in Japan, (矮鶏) meaning "dwarf" or "bantam". They are not cold-hardy, and like the Araucana, suffer from a lethal allele combination. Japanese Bantams are gentle and can be tamed easily.

With their long arched tail and small size, they are a very good companion as well as a showbird. When they first came to Japan they were ornamental birds who flocked the gardens of the wealthy.
