The Marans is a breed that originated in Marans, France. There are two types: the UK version and the French version. The French version has feathered legs, whereas the UK version has clean legs. It's a relatively rare breed, but well known for it's exceptionally dark brown eggs, thus the alternate name chocolate egger.

Marans are a fast growing breed and resistant to almost all climates, and are generally docile, the roosters nor the hens are aggressive, making them easy to look after. The only downside is that they can overeat, so it is best to keep them free-range.
