Preening is a form of grooming in which the beak is run through the feathers to remove debris and destribute feather oil from the oil gland. It is also used to fix damaged wings and to hunt for bugs potentially hiding in their feathers.

Some chickens preen together, as chickens are seen preening their flockmates. For some hens, it is hard to reach in some areas, particularly larger breeds, so other members of the flock preen them as a sign of friendship.
